To Home Seas album

…My journey across geographical continents and over the inner chasm from self-denial to self-love is the story of ‘To Home Seas’.  The songs, infused with the sounds of east and west, represent the eternal quest for a sense of belonging (between my two homes – Istanbul and Sydney) and the search for love in all its forms.

Behiye (Be) Suren is an Australian born singer/songwriter based between Sydney and Istanbul. Her original fusion folk music (in English and Turkish) weaves the rhythms and melodies of her two homelands with sensual, earthy lyrics about devotional/spiritual and romantic love, identity, ancestry and deep healing. Her velvet voice is rich and heart opening.

Her upcoming Australian Arts Council funded album ‘To Home Seas’ was written and recorded across geographical continents (in New Zealand, Cairns, Istanbul, Sydney) with the support of talented global musicians. It parallels her personal journey from self-denial to self-love. Her songs are an offering to anyone who resonates with her stories and feels the power of self-expression to heal and unlock the heart.

Nenemin Ninnisi’ (Grandma’s Lullaby), the first track of the album, tells a heart-opening story of  belonging, from the motherland Anatolia, to the Australian rainforest. The song was arranged and recorded by one of Turkey’s masters of folk music and pioneer of the fretless guitar, Erkan Ogur.

Behiye was a 2019 delegate at the Australian Women in Music Awards and has performed her music at international venues and cultural events (such as Anzac Centenary in Turkey in the presence of Prince Harry) and for Russell Crowe (on his Istanbul film set). Her debut EP ‘Season of Plums’ was featured on SBS/FBI radio shows and in Time Out Magazine.

Invisibility …. why do we hide?

Invisibility …. why do we hide?

We become invisible when we hide behind relationships, because we are afraid of life and want to be ‘rescued’. When I wrote this song, I had no clue that the need for a ‘rescuer’ would only ever attract controlling, cold partners to me. I hadn’t yet understood that there would never be a ‘saviour’ outside of learning to love myself.
